This Goan Vindaloo spice blend forms the base of an unusual dish combining traditional Goan cuisine with elements of Portuguese cooking. Unusual in an Indian curry recipe, traditional vindaloo incorporates vinegar in the marinade alongside more traditional spices like mustard seed, fenugreek, cumin, and turmeric.
Vindaloo hails from Goa, a region of India once colonized by the Portuguese and traces its roots to the Portuguese dish carne de vinha d'alhos. Truly authentic Goan vindaloo is less spicy than what is commonly served in curry houses and features pork marinated in vinegar and garlic and served with a flavorful sauce.
This mix contains:
- Mustard seed
- Fenugreek
- Cayenne pepper
- Cinnamon
- Cardamom
- Cumin
- Coriander
- Fenugreek
- Turmeric
- Paprika
- Ginger
- Garlic
To prepare, blend Goan Vindaloo spice blend with vinegar. Mix pork with marinade and let sit overnight. Brown the marinated pork pieces in a pan, adding more of the spice mix as needed. Add water and simmer until sauce is thickened, serve with traditional Indian rice. Full recipe here.

I ordered the entire set of Indian mixes from Spiceable and this one is my favorite. Apparently, the vindaloo popular in curry houses is not the same as what you get in Goa, and this mix really hits different.
As an Indian who hails from the northern region, Spiceable's Goan Vindaloo Mix allowed me to explore the coastal flavors of India! The spice blend is authentic, and it gives my curries a tangy and spicy kick. I've used it with pork and potatoes, just like the traditional Goan recipe.
