This Dal Masala blend makes for a delicious dal, a delicious and filling lentil dish with many regional variations. This humble yet near-universal dish on the subcontinent features lentils simmered with a mix of spices, often with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and even potatoes added.
Dal is a staple ingredient in a variety of Indian dishes. Preparations differ by region, time, and flavor, but dal tadka is believed to be the most ancient recipe, served at a wedding feast in 303 BCE. This mix can be used in a variety of dishes, but the simplest is this ancient recipe.
This Dal Masala Blend contains:
Coriander
Cumin
Turmeric
Red chili powder
Cinnamon
Cloves
Peppercorn
Ginger
Garlic
To prepare, fry chopped onions in oil. When the onions begin to brown, add a spoonful of dal masala and stir. Add chopped tomatoes and sautee until tomatoes begin to dissolve. Meanwhile, cook dal in boiling water until soft and thickened. Add spice and tomato mixture, then serve with naan, roti, or other flatbread.
